Ειρήνη Βουρλούμη. Party like there is no tomorrow, 2015

Στην ενότητα Party like there is no tomorrow (Ας γιορτάσουμε σαν να μην υπάρχει αύριο· ας σημειωθεί πως η λέξη party σημαίνει και πολιτικό κόμμα), η Βουρλούμη εστιάζει στη φορτισμένη προεκλογική περίοδο του Ιανουαρίου του 2015 που θα ανατρέψει τους πολιτικούς συσχετισμούς χρόνων, θα οδηγήσει στην πρώτη νίκη του ΣΥΡΙΖΑ, ενώ η νεοναζιστική Χρυσή Αυγή θα καταλάβει την τρίτη θέση. Η Βουρλούμη πηγαίνει σε όλες σχεδόν τις προεκλογικές συγκεντρώσεις και αποτυπώνει στιγμιότυπα που συνθέτουν ένα αλλόκοτο σύμπαν, ένα παζλ από φωτογραφικά τρίπτυχα, ένα θορυβώδες, πολύχρωμο πολιτικό τσίρκο, όπου συνυπάρχουν πάγκοι μικροπωλητών, πρόσωπα οπαδών, εξώφυλλα εφημερίδων, λεπτομέρειες του αστικού τοπίου, κομματικές και εθνικές σημαίες και το αλαλάζον πλήθος.

Η Ειρήνη Βουρλούμη γεννήθηκε το 1979 και έχει ελληνική και ινδονησιακή καταγωγή. Η δουλειά της χαρακτηρίζεται κυρίως από μια τεκμηριωτική και εννοιολογική προσέγγιση της φωτογραφίας, που διερευνά τα κοινωνικά και πολιτικά περιβάλλοντα για να προβάλει τη δυναμική τους στο πλαίσιο της οικονομικής και προσφυγικής κρίσης στην Ελλάδα. H Βουρλούμη είναι επίσης συνεργάτιδα φωτορεπόρτερ σε διεθνή Μέσα, μεταξύ των οποίων και στους New York Times, και μέλος της ομάδας Depression Era.

The Party like there is no tomorrow series (in both the celebratory and political meanings of “party”), focuses on the politically charged pre-election period of January 2015 that saw the upending of long-established political paradigms by the first-time win of socialist party SYRIZA, but also the rise of the neo-Nazi party, Golden Dawn that came in third. Vourloumis participated in many pre-election gatherings over three consecutive days, and took snapshots capturing the surrealness of the moment that resulted in a puzzle of photographic triptychs, as she herself describes it, where street vendors’ stalls, posters of dedicated party supporters, the front pages of newspapers, fragments of the city’s landscape, party and national flags, and cheering crowds all coexist within a noisy, colourful, political circus.

Eirini Vourloumi was born in 1979 and is of Greek and Indonesian descent. Her work takes a mostly documentary and conceptual approach to photography that explores social and political contexts to project their dynamics in relation to the economic and refugee crisis in Greece. Vourloumi is also a contributing photojournalist in international media, including the New York Times, and is also a member of the Depression Era team.
