George Prinos’ photographic research in areas of concentrated economic and political power (here the City of London) has produced a series of street portraits where the internalisation of anxiety, emotional exhaustion, and the loss of social ties emerge as features of the condition of living in the postcapitalist age. Beneath the frieze of his portraits, Prinos places as footnotes images of various sources and subjects, which have a complementary and commentatory relationship to his own photographs. On first glance, Prinos seems to probe the psychic and moral price of the accumulation of wealth and power: an incalculable cost in loneliness. Delving deeper, however, one can often discern on his faces a transcendental, sacrificial exaltation that brings them close to ecstasy or deification. Here, digital dematerialisation is equivalent to the religious transcendence of the body. Modern love is a version of the timeless Christian love, with all the passion and loss it entails.
