INTERNATIONAL CURATORS VISITING PROGRAMME

The National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens announces the launch of the ΕΜSΤ International Curators Visiting Programme. Aimed at promoting the work of Greek visual artists on the international cultural scene, the programme invites international art professionals, curators and exhibition organisers to visit the country in order to conduct field research and to gain insight into the work of artists living and working in Greece, as well as beyond its borders.

The ΕΜSΤ International Curators Visiting Programme will highlight the work of contemporary Greek artists and facilitate the presentation of their work internationally. At the same time, the work of Greek curators and cultural practitioners will also be promoted through organised visits to exhibitions at art venues and cultural organisations.

The objective is to consolidate the growing international interest in the country’s cultural production, further establishing it as an important focal point in the broader geographic area, in a more systematic and institutional manner, while fostering the development of long-term relationships that will trigger new collaborations and partnerships.

This aligns with the mission of the museum to seek out, support and promote contemporary Greek art with a focus on the rich artistic and avant-garde legacy of the Greek diaspora and the rich and contested histories of the geographical space it forms part of, which includes the Balkans, Turkey, the near Middle East and North Africa.

As part of the programme, ΕΜSΤ will regularly invite international curators and exhibition organisers. These guests, either curators of museums or independent curators from all over the world, will be planning major international exhibitions in the near future. They will take part in a tailor-made programme designed to serve the needs of their research and fields of interest, which also includes visits to artists’ studios, art venues and exhibitions, as well as facilitating introductions to art professionals living and working in Greece.

Participating curators are selected either by invitation or by application. For further information or to apply, please contact Fivos Sakalis, ΕΜSΤ International Relations.

DESCRIPTION

The programme includes studio visits and meetings with artists, visits to exhibitions and networking events. Each curator is sent a list of proposed artists and downloadable of their work depending on field of interest, research, and current exhibition projects (in progress). The curator sends his/hers/theirs feedback and the programme is built on this basis.

The programme usually involves about ten to twelve meetings with artists.
A minimum of four days is required.
Each visiting curator is asked to give a lecture on a subject agreed by both parties.
