TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF EMST EXHIBITION PROGRAMME
- THE APPROVAL OF THE GRANT OF THE STAVROS NIARCHOS FOUNDATION
- AND THE TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF ITS EXHIBITION PROGRAMME AS IT BEGINS TO IMPLEMENT ITS MUSEOLOGIC AND MUSEOGRAPHIC PLAN
The years 2015-2018 have been very important for the mission and operations of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST). The period was marked by the final acceptance of the new building, followed soon after by the start in October 2016 of a program of temporary exhibitions in Athens, a series of acclaimed exhibition initiatives abroad, and the application for the Stavros Niarchos Foundation grant.
Since resuming its exhibition program, the Museum has been making use of the building’s temporary exhibition spaces, educational facilities, conference and screening room, the museum shop and other facilities, producing or supporting a large number of exhibitions and other activities including conferences, talks, book presentations, film screenings, and dance and musical performances.
The pivotal moment for EMST in continuing its dynamic development was the approval of a €3,000,000 grant by the Stavros Niarchos Foundation. The funds will allow the Museum to undertake the work needed to realize its core strategic goal of full operations, with the equipment and implementation of the approved plans for the installation of its permanent collection on the three top floors, the operation of the media lounge, and the completion of the screening and conference room, the library, the archives, the roof terrace and other areas. During the same time, the public tender for the operation of the café and restaurant will also have been completed.
For this reason, as of July 17, 2018 EMST will suspend its exhibition activity in order to dismantle the exhibitions that have just ended and proceed as soon as possible with the construction work and the planning of its program of exhibitions for 2018-2020. EMST will soon announce its upcoming initiatives and activities in Greece and abroad, which will be based on partnerships and collaborative projects, as was the case in all its programs from 2016.
The Museum’s offices are open Monday to Friday 9:00-17:00.
EMST would like to warmly thank its collaborators, friends and public, who have supported its efforts during this crucial and creative time as well as the Stavros Niarchos Foundation for its trust.
