Wonder Women

From the EMST Collection

Athens Conservatoire - Project Room

In the framework of the International Women’s Day on March the 8th, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens presents the screening program Wonder Women with video works from its collection. The screenings, which are presented in the Project Room, comprise of ten single channel works by women that critically investigate aspects of womens’ identity.

In these works we can perceive several issues like the relation of gender with family and society, (Sadie Benning, Flat is Beautiful, 1998 and Mona Hatoum, Measures of Distance, 1988), the disarming and subversive boldness of the romantic pursuit in the works of Sophie Calle (DoubleBlind, 1992)  and Shelly Silver (What Im Looking for, 2004), the religious sexuality of the body in Carolee Schneemann’s Up To and Including her Limits, 1976, the fear of disability and disease and the reconnection of the weakened body with its surroundings (Rebecca Horn, Performances 1, Performances 2, 1970-1973) as well as the investigation, mockery and subversion of media stereotypes that we can see in the work of Dara Birnbaum (Technology / Transformation: Wonder Woman, 1978-1979), Pipilotti Rist (I am not the girl who misses much, 1986), Martha Rosler (Semiotics of the Kitchen, 1975), and Joan Jonas (Vertical Roll, 1972).
