WASTE. OUR INHERITANCE. A CONVERSATION

A conversation as part of the art project Waste/Inheritance. A public negotiation with the repressed by artist Jennifer Nelson

THURSDAY 03.11.2022 at 18.30

EMΣΤ is hosting a conversation on the inheritance of waste and waste as inheritance. What is the waste we have inherited from the past? What is the waste we bequeath to the next generation? What is the economy that produces our waste? What can we do to stop the overabundance of waste that poses a threat to the seas, our health and the life of the species on our planet? The conversation, which will be moderated by Mrs Anna Mykoniati, curator of ΕΜΣΤ, will feature Mrs Evridiki Kefalidou, archaeologist and associate professor of Archaeology at the University of Athens and Mrs Anastasia Miliou, hydrobiologist and scientific director for Archipelagos Institute of Marine Conservation.

The event is part of the art project Waste/Inheritance. A public negotiation with the repressed by artist Jennifer Nelson. The art project started in ΕΜΣΤ on 17.06.2022 and will end on 20.11.22.

Jennifer Nelson has been collecting her family’s packaging and material waste for a year. Since last May, Nelson has been working in ΕΜΣΤ as part of the Artist At Work initiative and has sculpted this discarded material into forms that can be worn on the body, with the goal being for her to be able to carry it. It is a form of accountability–to literally shoulder the burden of the consequences of our way of life.
