ARS LONGA, VITA BREVIS: A TRIBUTE TO ANNA KAFETSI

Amphitheatre, -1

On Saturday, 24 October, at 12:30, EMΣΤ will host a tribute to Anna Kafetsi, the Museum’s founding director, focusing on her thought and writings and their central role to her seminal  institutional, scholarly and curatorial work.

PROGRAMME

Welcome address by ΕΜΣΤ Artistic-General Director Katerina Gregos| 12:30–12:45

Anna Kafetsi in Her Own Words | 12:30–13:45

Drawing on archival material from Save the Dates—An Audiovisual Archive for Contemporary Art, including screenings of selected excerpts from television, radio, and public appearances, this part of the event revisits key moments in Kafetsi’s distinguished career—from the inauguration of EMΣΤ and its early years of operation to major exhibitions she curated—and highlights the ideas and preoccupations that shaped her path.

“Anna Kafetsi: The Poetics of Memory”: a presentation of ΕΜΣΤ online magazine Octopus’s special commemorative issue | 13:30–13:45

Octopus, ΕΜΣΤ’s online magazine, presents a special issue dedicated to the thought, work, and legacy of Anna Kafets. Bringing together contributions by former colleagues at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, researchers, and intellectual companions and peers, as well as previously unpublished archival material and photographs, the issue traces Kafetsi’s evolution from her early work as publisher and editor-in-chief of Speira magazine and curator at the National Gallery, to her role as founding director of the National Museum of Contemporary Art, and through the later stages of her career. The issue features texts by Kostas Christopoulos, Eleni Ganiti, Katerina Gregos, Elisavet Ioannidi, Evgenios Matthaiopoulos, Katerina Matsa, Tina Pandi, Stamatis Schizakis, Marina Tsekou, Yiorgos Tzirtzilakis, Anina Valkana and Daphne Vitali.

An Afternoon of Literary Readings | 13:45–14:30

The second part of the event will take the form of a collective reading of poems and literary excerpts by friends, colleagues, and artists who were close to her. Poetry was an enduring touchstone in Anna Kafetsi’s life, thought, and curatorial practice. The selected poems and prose excerpts offer insight into her personality, sensibility, and intellectual life through the voices of people who were her companions.

With readings by Christos Chryssopoulos, Yorgos Drivas, Makis Faros, Phoebe Giannisi, Yorgos Hadjimichalis, Zisis Kotionis, Nina Papaconstantinou, Danae Stratou.

ΕΜΣΤ Library is renamed The Anna Kafetsi Library

On the same day, the Museum’s Library will be renamed in her honour, in a gesture meant to preserve her memory and commemorate her legacy and defining contribution to the founding of ΕΜΣΤ.
