COLLABORATION: EMΣT – CLOSED WOMEN’S SHELTER OF THE 18ANO DETOXIFICATION UNIT

Storytelling Through Collage Workshop on Domestic Violence

As part of the exhibition SUSAN MEISELAS – A ROOM OF THEIR OWN, presented at EMΣT within the exhibition cycle WHAT IF WOMEN RULED THE WORLD?, a special storytelling art workshop on domestic violence was held in collaboration with the closed women’s shelter of the 18ANO Detoxification Unit.

The workshop was led by Susan Meiselas and her collaborator Luciana Pinchiero, in collaboration with the photographer and specialist therapist of 18ANO, Yiannis Vastardis, and the EMΣT team, conducted the workshop.

During two sessions held in the space of the closed structure, the participants were encouraged to reflect on their experiences, process them, and express them through images, texts, and objects with deep personal meaning. Using the technique of collage, individual memories and stories were transformed into visual narratives, linking the personal with the collective.
In the third and final session, the participants presented their creations, engaged in discussion, and shared thoughts and emotions.

Finally, the visual narratives created during the workshop were integrated into Susan Meiselas’ exhibition space, forming a poignant intervention in the overall presentation of her work.
