ART PSYCHOTHERAPY FOR MENTAL HEALTH PATIENTS AT ΕΜΣΤ – SECOND PHASE

ΕΜΣΤ participates with two art psychotherapy groups in the pilot project SUB.2.1 “Cultural Prescription as Complementary Care in Mental Health” of the Ministry of Culture. The first group will be realized from September to November 2025, and the second one from November 2025 to February 2026.

This initiative is part of the Recovery and Resilience Fund, with financing from the European Union – Next Generation EU, within the framework of the National Recovery and Resilience Plan “Greece 2.0.” It falls under Priority Axis 4.6 “Modernization and improvement of the resilience of key sectors of the economy,” specifically within the initiative “Culture and Wellbeing: Art as Prescribed Therapy (art on prescription),” which promotes social cohesion and harnesses the potential of the “silver economy.”

The implementation of the program requires research work for the design, delivery, and evaluation of the individual actions, in order to ensure the best possible outcome. The framework is being developed by a ten-member research team at the University Research Institute of Mental Health, Neurosciences and Precision Medicine “Kostas Stefanis” (EPIPSY), under the scientific supervision of Professor Nikos Stefanis, and is implemented by the Directorate of Performing Arts and Cinema of the Ministry of Culture.

The aim of the project is to create an organizational framework for integrating Art Prescription as a complementary therapeutic practice for individuals with mental health difficulties or psychological burden resulting from chronic illnesses. It includes the design and pilot implementation of the program, the study of the effects of engagement with art and culture, the exploration of participation processes for patients and cultural institutions, as well as supervision and evaluation for its optimization. At the same time, appropriate tools will be developed for incorporating the action into the electronic prescription platform of IDIKA S.A.

The coordination of the groups is realized by Katerina Nasia Ramadani, Psychologist & Art Psychotherapist and Elisabeth Ioannides, EMΣΤ Education Curator & Art Psychotherapist.
