Threads of Creation is a participatory creative activity organised by EMΣT | National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens to mark this year’s International Museum Day, held under the theme “Museums Uniting a Divided World.” Threads of Creation transforms the museum space into a vibrant meeting place, where visitors of different ages and cultural backgrounds are invited to take part in a collective knitting experience. Participants are encouraged to inform the creative process with their own techniques and patterns, as well as their personal, familial or collective memories of knitting.
Through this experience of coexistence and communal making, knitting emerges as a shared language that facilitates communication and exchange and helps forge new relationships, transforming the museum into a vital space for dialogue, inclusion, and social cohesion.
Threads of Creation is in dialogue with the exhibition Ode to Things. Niki Kanagini. A Retrospective, curated by Tina Pandi, which highlights the significance of materials, gestures, and everyday objects as vessels of memory, identity, and lived experience. Kanagini’s practice—often employing fabric and weaving to blur the boundaries between art and craft—references the manifold ways lived experience is passed down through the generations, illuminating the connections between artistic creation, women’s labour, domestic memory and collective history. Threads of Creation draws inspiration from this framework, proposing a space where the act of making becomes an opportunity for encounter, storytelling, and shared experience.
The event features two knitting circles held within the museum, open to all visitors regardless of their level of experience.
Participants are invited to:
- knit individually or as part of a collective
- exchange techniques, skills and creative approaches
- share stories, memories, and cultural traditions
