“Navigating the Contemporary: Art, Interpretation, and Pedagogy.”
9–11 October 2026

The Education Department of EMΣT | National Museum of Contemporary Art Athens, in collaboration with Goethe-Institut Athen, organised the three-day educational programme “Navigating the Contemporary: Art, Interpretation, and Pedagogy” (9–11 October 2026), for educators at all levels, artists, cultural mediators and students. The programme comprised a public lecture and an experiential workshop, led by Dr Ernst Wagner, a researcher and professor at the UNESCO Chair in Digital Culture and Arts in Education.

The lecture “Challenging Times and Museums: Perspectives on Understanding Contemporary Art” took place on Friday, 9 October, at Goethe-Institut Athen and focused on the challenges of understanding and teaching contemporary art in a world characterised by successive crises and increasing complexity.

On Saturday, 10 October, and Sunday, 11 October, the programme continued at EMST with the experiential workshop “How Can We Understand and Communicate Contemporary Art to the Public?”. Participants explored contemporary methodologies for interpreting and mediating contemporary art and experimented with applying them to works presented in the EMST exhibition “SOUTH BY SOUTHEAST Re-Orienting the Collection”.

The workshop provided a space for the exchange of ideas and interdisciplinary dialogue, enabling participants to explore different approaches to contemporary art and reflect on how these methodologies might be applied in the classroom and in other educational and cultural settings.
