CineFIX, ΕΜΣΤ’s art-house cinema, kicks off the new season with a programme dedicated to contemporary documentary filmmaking. ΡΕΥΜΑ / CURRENT, curated by film programmer and visual artist Antigoni Papantoni, takes centre stage from September through to December, bringing together films that explore the documentary image as something far more than a record of the past. Here, the image becomes a living force—one capable of reshaping memory, engaging with politics and transforming the world around us.
In dialogue with ΕΜΣΤ’s collection exhibition South by Southeast, among other touchstones, ΡΕΥΜΑ / CURRENT turns its lens towards the Mediterranean, the Balkans, the Middle East and North Africa, approaching them not as fixed geographical or cultural entities, but as fluid spaces continually reshaped by diverse encounters, exchanges and historical entanglements. Several of the films are having their Greek premiere at ΕΜΣΤ. Together, they explore how personal memories, archives and lived experiences intersect with broader social, political and ecological dynamics. The documentary thus becomes not only a means of recording reality, but also a way of observing the processes through which reality changes and acquires new meanings.
The programme opens on Thursday, 24 September, on the Museum Rooftop Terrace, with the award-winning documentary Fire of Love (2022), directed by Sara Dosa. Following the opening screening, the programme will continue with screenings on two Sundays each month in the Screening Room, on the Museum Mezzanine.
Biography
Antigoni Papantoni (Athens, 1987) is a cultural producer, curator of programmes for international film organisations and visual artist. She graduated from the Vevey School of Photography in Switzerland and studied Computer Science and Film Theory & Aesthetics.
She has curated film programmes and screenings for international and Greek cultural organisations and collaborates with festivals and film organisations, including IDFA – International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam, Visions du Réel – International Film Festival Nyon in Switzerland, FIFDH – International Film Festival and Forum on Human Rights in Geneva, Qumra of the Doha Film Institute, an international incubator for the development of film projects from the Middle East and North Africa, Jihlava International Documentary Film Festival in the Czech Republic, and the Thessaloniki International Film Festival. She has worked for Greek film production company Heretic and CIRCLE – Women Doc Accelerator, an international documentary workshop. She currently heads the Short Film Hub, the professional platform of the Drama International Short Film Festival, and works as a producer, consultant and curator in the fields of documentary and contemporary visual storytelling.

Ardoyne is an inner-city neighbourhood of Belfast still marked by poverty, drugs and violence, while the collective trauma of the Troubles in Northern Ireland remains close to the surface. Kevin McArevey, the headmaster of a local primary school, has a different vision: to help his pupils grow up in a better world, free from anger and violence. To this end, he introduces the study of ancient Greek philosophy into the school curriculum, creating a small oasis of peace and reflection where children are encouraged to think for themselves rather than respond with their fists.
Surrounded by portraits of Plato, Aristotle and Seneca, the lively pupils learn to think, question, challenge assumptions and reflect philosophically on their own lives.

Writing with Fire (2021) follows Meera, a journalist and Chief Reporter at Khabar Lahariya, India’s only news outlet run by Dalit women. As the organisation makes the transition from print to digital journalism, Meera and her fellow reporters investigate corruption, violence against women and political developments, confronting threats, social discrimination and deeply entrenched inequalities along the way.
The film also follows Suneeta, a younger journalist mentored by Meera, as she seeks to establish her professional independence within a context shaped by intense family and social pressures. Through the journeys of these women, the film highlights the power of independent journalism and the struggle for a female voice in the face of social inequality, oppression and violence.

Fire of Love (2022) tells the story of French volcanologists Katia and Maurice Krafft, a couple who devoted their lives to studying and documenting volcanoes. Drawing on extraordinary archival footage, the film traces their devotion to science and shared fascination with volcanoes and the deep personal bond between them. Their exploration of some of the world’s most dangerous volcanoes is a portrait of love that is inseparable from the pursuit of knowledge, adventure and an acceptance of risk.
