The Screening program titled “Secret Journeys” presents 6 videos from the EMST collection with themes coming out of traveling, searching and wandering in a physical or mental space. Contact with nature or another culture as well as the experience of travel itself become motives for observations and revelations.

Bill Viola completed Hatsu Yume (First Dream) during a residency in Japan, deeply affected by its culture. Through the contrast between nature and civilization, movement and stillness, light and darkness, this video deals with the relation between life and death.

The depressed heroine of the video Suicide by Shelly Silver departs on a journey to various Asian urban centres with the intention to commit suicide. By observing life at airports and stations, a new hope is born and the narrator constantly postpones the realisation of her initial purpose.

At the work Double-Blind of Sophie Calle and Gregory Shephard a journey becomes the starting point for an investigation of erotic desire by humorously juxtaposing video-taped confessions.

Martha Rosler, in Secrets From the Street: No Disclosure records images from a San Francisco neighbourhood that reveal the political aspect of street culture.

Beyond a journey into literature the “translation” of Maurice Blanchot’s Thomas the Obscure by Garry Hill into the work Incidence of Catastrophe transforms a literary experience into an unsettling experience of the flesh.

In the three-part work The Red Tapes, Vito Acconci combines poetry, photography and performance in an attempt to chart his artistic persona, while also investigating the connections between the personal and psychological with the social and public.
