Chinese Xieyi

Masterpieces from the National Art Museum of China

The exhibition of the National Art Museum of China (NAMOC) Chinese Xieyi: Masterpieces from the National Art Museum of China is presented at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) in the framework of the Year of Cultural Exchanges between Greece and China. The exhibition, the catalogue and the parallel events are the first testimonies of the collaboration between the two Museums with the aim of strengthening transnational relations and intercultural exchange in the field of art, supported by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports and the Ministry of Culture of the People’s Republic of China. The NAMOC exhibition in Athens is realized with the collaboration of the EMST for the creation of a bridge between the two cultures, to spread Chinese culture in Greece, to deepen the relations of the two countries for the mutual exchange of cultural and artistic knowledge and practices. In 2018, NAMOC will welcome an exhibition by EMST in Beijing with corresponding goals.

The exhibition Chinese Xieyi: Masterpieces from the National Art Museum of China grouped into three parts – Freehand Brushwork, Imagery and Artistic Conception – showcases the NAMOC’s pursuit for the promotion and implementation of the ethos of Chinese culture. Viewing these exhibits, the audience gets insights into the unique Chinese ethos, epochal marks, and cultural confidence implied in the works, feel the humanistic spirit that has run through the 5.000 years of Chinese culture and tradition, and have an experience of the noble loftiness of literati painting and the flowing grace of aesthetic imagery. Ancient Greece as the cradle of Western civilization had a great influence on the course of world history through its cultural and technological advance. China, one of the four great ancient civilizations of the world, has a cultural tradition that has continued to date. NAMOC launched this exhibition at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) with the aim of promoting cultural collaboration and interaction between the two countries.
