Niki Kanagini

Manuscript for the Potential Viewer or Reader

The large-scale Manuscripts in pencil dating from the 1980s are presented alongside chairs to accommodate “potential viewers and readers,” creating a space for two-way communication and the active participation of visitors. The notion of “viewer-readers” is an expression of Kanagini’s intent to create the contemplative and sequestered conditions necessary for her visual texts to be viewed/read – to “impose an atmosphere of concentration that can perhaps help them journey off alone, wherever and however they like,” is how she put it. Visitors are invited to sit down on a chair and immerse themselves in the labyrinthine pathways and images, or else create pathways of their own. This section includes large-scale pencil-drawn manuscripts from the 1980s where writing functions as a personal and often cryptic abstract narrative creating an expansive plain for interpretation and contemplation that allows viewers to activate their own imaginations.
