Niki Kanagini

Column

Niki Kanagini’s experiments with tapestry led to the creation of “interior sculptures” where threads of various materials are liberated from two-dimensionality and expand into space in both geometric and organic ways. Column is a characteristic example of this transition: a pliable sculpture made of soft and flexible materials, with the potential to be presented in multiple configurations. The cotton ropes move freely through the space, connecting the curves or seemingly erratic trajectories of two “spines” made of metal wire. The pliancy of this construct allows for constant reconfigurations of form which ultimately redefine the very notion of tapestry, turning it into a three-dimensional, dynamic structure. The drawings that accompany the sculpture propose various possible iterations, underlining both the relationship between form, materiality, and space, and Kanagini’s experimental approach to sculpture through the use of new materials. This work was first presented at the 5th Biennale Internationale de Tapisserie in Lausanne (1971).
