M.E.Σ.Α. Meuseum of People’s Free Thinking

EMST

The National Museum of Contemporary Art, Athens (EMST) willing to emphasize the social role of art and institutions, hosted the Museum of People’s Free Thinking (M.E.Σ.Α.) as the third of the events PROLOGUES (PROLEGOMENA).

M.E.Σ.Α. was founded in April 2015 by the students of the 2nd School of Second Chance in the city of Trikala and then was extended to the 3rd School of Second Chance Thessaloniki (Prison of Diavata), the School of Second Chance of the Korydallos Prison “George Zouganelis”, the Primary School at the Juvenile Detention Center of Avlonas and the Alternative School for Adults in KETHEA Exodos, Larissa. It is a nomadic contemporary art museum, which is designed by the pupils themselves and formed with their own artworks, in order for the ones “inside” to communicate with the ones “outside”.

M.E.Σ.A. was funded by the program “START – Create Cultural Change” of the Robert Bosch Stiftung (Foundation Robert Bosch) which is implemented in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Thessaloniki and the Bundesvereinigung Soziokultureller Zentrene.V. (Federal Association of Sociopolitical Centres) under the overall coordination of curator Mrs. Niovi Zarampouka-Chatzimanou. EMST has been a companion of M.E.Σ.Α. from the beginning, due to its perennial experience through its program EMST Without Borders. It contributed as a catalyst in the formation of this event, with Mrs. Marina Tsekou, Education Curator of EMST, leading the program on behalf of the Museum.

The works presented, with freedom as the dominant axis, used a variety of media such as performance, sound composition and installation, photography, painting and sculpture.

The opening of Μ.Ε.Σ.Α. was realized on Monday, June 27, its presentation was free to the public and it lasted from the 28th of June until the 3rd of July 2016.
