ARTIST'S BIO
Since the mid-1970s, Gary Hill (Santa Monica, USA, 1951) started creating works that today are considered landmarks in the relation between language and the electronic image and have undoubtedly expanded the possibilities of video art. Drawing inspiration from literature, philosophy and science, often in collaboration with poets and actors, he created works –narratives and situations–where the immaterial linguistic communication and electronic image immediately affect the body and the mind of the viewer. His rich work is at the intersection of visual arts, technology, linguistics and literature, has received many awards (MacArthur Award Grand, 1998, Leone d’ Oro, Prize for Sculpture, Venice Biennale, 1995), whereas it has been presented in important museums such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York (2004, 1990), Watari Museum of Contemporary Art in Tokyo (1992, 2000), Dia Center for the Arts in New York (1995), Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris (1992) and Whitney Museum of American Art in New York (1986).
